Privacy policy

Effective date: March 14, 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy ("Policy") describes how Aftercull ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, stores, and protects information when you use the Aftercull macOS application ("App"), the Aftercull website at aftercull.app ("Site"), and any related services (collectively, "Services"). By accessing or using our Services, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Policy.

2. Local-first architecture & file system access

Aftercull is designed as a local-first macOS application. All photo culling, editing metadata, project organization, and workflow processing occur entirely on your device. Your image files, project data, and workflow metadata remain stored locally on your hard drive or connected storage devices.

File system access. To function, Aftercull requires read and write access to directories and files on your local file system that you explicitly grant through macOS permissions or file-picker dialogs. This access is used solely to read, organize, move, rename, copy, or delete image files and associated metadata as directed by you within the App.

No cloud upload of photos. Aftercull does not upload, transmit, or sync your photographs, image files, or project data to any remote server, cloud service, or third party unless a specific feature explicitly states otherwise and you affirmatively opt in.

You are solely responsible for your local data. Because all data processing occurs on your device, you are entirely responsible for maintaining backups of your files, photos, and project data. We have no access to, control over, or copies of your locally stored content and therefore cannot recover deleted, lost, or corrupted files under any circumstances.

3. Information we collect

We may collect the following categories of information:

3.1 Account & licensing information. When you purchase a license or create an account, we collect your name, email address, payment information (processed by third-party payment processors), and device identifiers necessary for license activation and verification.

3.2 Website analytics. Our Site uses standard analytics tools that may collect IP addresses, browser type, operating system, referring URLs, pages visited, and interaction timestamps. This data is used to improve our website, understand usage patterns, and prevent abuse.

3.3 Application telemetry (optional). The App may collect anonymous, aggregated usage telemetry such as feature usage frequency, crash reports, and performance metrics. This telemetry does not include your photographs, file names, file paths, or project content. You may opt out of telemetry in the App settings.

3.4 Support communications. When you contact us for support, we collect your email address, message content, and any attachments you voluntarily provide. We retain this information to resolve issues, manage your license, and improve future releases.

3.5 Cookies & similar technologies. Our Site uses cookies and similar tracking technologies for analytics, session management, and to remember your preferences. You can control cookie settings through your browser.

4. How we use your information

We use collected information to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve our Services
  • Process transactions and manage software licenses
  • Respond to support requests and communicate with you
  • Send product updates, security notices, and administrative messages
  • Detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, and security issues
  • Generate anonymous, aggregated analytics to improve the product
  • Comply with legal obligations

5. Information sharing & disclosure

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may share information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers. With third-party vendors who assist us in operating the Services (e.g., payment processors, analytics providers, hosting services), subject to confidentiality obligations.
  • Legal requirements. When required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
  • Protection of rights. To enforce our Terms of Service, protect our rights, privacy, safety, or property, or that of our users or the public.
  • Business transfers. In connection with a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, in which case your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

6. Data retention

We retain personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this Policy, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements. When personal information is no longer needed, we will delete or anonymize it.

Local data. Data stored locally on your device by the App is under your sole control. Uninstalling the App does not automatically delete project files or associated data on your device. You are responsible for managing and deleting local data.

7. Data security

We implement commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we collect and store. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You acknowledge that you provide information at your own risk.

8. Your rights & choices

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights regarding your personal information, including the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, and the right to withdraw consent or object to processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at hello@aftercull.app.

We will respond to verified requests within the timeframes required by applicable law. We may decline requests that are unreasonable, repetitive, or that jeopardize the privacy of others.

Please note: Because Aftercull operates as a local-first application and we do not store your photos or project data, we are unable to retrieve, recover, or delete data that exists solely on your device. Requests for deletion apply only to data we hold on our servers (e.g., account information, support correspondence).

9. Children’s privacy

Our Services are not directed to individuals under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 16, we will take steps to delete it promptly.

10. International data transfers

Our servers and service providers may be located outside your country of residence. By using our Services, you consent to the transfer, processing, and storage of your information in jurisdictions that may have different data protection laws than your own.

11. Third-party links & services

Our Services may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third parties. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any personal information.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the revised Policy on our Site with an updated effective date. Your continued use of the Services after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
